Whiskey & Wine

Ellie Ray Vaughn needs to start over. A clean slate, a redo. She’s starting college and running away from an abusive ex-boyfriend and all of her mother’s mistakes, which means she’s trying to avoid two things. Music and men. Unfortunately for her, Dean Thomas is both of those things. He’s arrogant, pushy, and completely infuriating. But Ellie can’t seem to shake him, and in Nashville, it’s hard to run for the music that runs in her veins. They form an unlikely friendship as she tries to stifle the heat between them, but Dean won’t let her hold anything back.

As far as Dean Thomas is concerned, nothing matters but music. He’s come to Nashville to pursue one thing, a record deal. Well, two things if you count all the girls he chases. He’s always been chasing the same ghost, but he doesn’t even believe she exists anymore...until he lays eyes on Ellie. She’s hard-headed, passionate and the most talented musician he has ever met. So why is she trying to stifle her talents, and her feelings?

A Sea of Lies

Bree Harrington and Sam Hudson have oceans between them. For one thing, she’s married. The legitimacy of her marriage, or lack thereof, is not enough to push their relationship past the bounds of friendship, but it doesn’t take long to realize they’ve both found something others have searched the world for... The other half of their soul.

Sam leaves Bree breathless from the moment they meet. Bree leaves Sam heartless from the moment she leaves.

When Bree’s husband dies, she finds herself utterly alone. After years of trying to put the broken pieces back together, fate gives Bree and Sam a second chance. But all the time and distance between them has come with many omitted truths. Can a once in a lifetime kind of love survive a sea of lies?

Reviews

Alicia Butler

4.0 out of 5 stars-She Compelled Me

Book: A Sea of Lies

I have been sitting here for a few days wondering how to write a review for this book. I find it so hard to come up with the right words. From the moment I started reading, H. Dillon Hunt's writing style drew me in. She compelled me. I couldn't stop, because there was an exquisite beauty to the way she weaves words together to tell this story.

Then, I got more in depth with the characters and my goodness I haven't loved a couple this much in so long. If you don't root for them, there's something wrong with you. She's someone I think most of us women can relate to, and Sam is just perfect. Even when he's royally screwing up, you can't help but hope he'll fix his mess and they'll pull through.

As I have said in the past, prose is a hard one to win me on. H. Dillon Hunt has come closer than any other author in a long time. Her words have a rhythm, a beat. I highlighted so many phrases solely based on my appreciation for the way she pieced them together.

Last, but not least, the story. This book truly is a journey. Fasten your seatbelt and prepare for the ride. There are so many twists and turns, but they all come together like a puzzle. At times you're not sure where the piece fits, but in the end you have a beautiful picture to cherish.

Well done, H. Dillon Hunt. I give you 4.5 out of 5 stars, and eagerly await your next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars-There are no words to describe the emotions that this fantastic author evokes in a girl!

Book: A Sea of Lies

As described in the blurb, Sam and Bree meet and have an instant connection. The problem? Well, when Sam and Bree meet, it just so happens that she is married to a complete jerk that is angry, unfriendly, and unfaithful. So although they want to be together, they can't. They eventually get a second chance, however, there are still a ton of issues and a ton of cards stacked against them. I loved both Sam and Bree from beginning to end, but of course, they had some flaws. Her husband Ryan does redeem himself just a tiny bit, although post-mortem, but this all comes together to make a very tumultuous and romantic story.

Besides just the joy of reading Hunt’s writing, the beauty of reading this novel the message regarding the importance of honesty and being up-front no matter what. This novel has a way of chiseling into your soul where you are overjoyed to connect with the characters, but at the same time, you sort of flinch at memories of things you could have would have or should have done differently. Don’t get me wrong, Bree and Sam completely steal the show (as they should) but their story breathes life into the reader and serves as a reminder of how we are only given so many chances, so try to do it right.

Bree and Sam represent a connection that most of us could only wish for. They get second and third chances and so on, but it’s that initial spark that us girls dream about while playing princess and wedding and Barbie stuff while growing up. But the cool thing about this author is that she’s subtle about it at first. I felt like there were big things to come for this couple, but she constructed a beautiful plot representing their highs and lows – a lot like real life. It wasn’t just a fairy tale but an ongoing process of dealing with the other’s real-life stuff, working through it and deciding that no matter what, they were worth it end in the end.

If you have ever been punished for something beyond your control, punished someone for something that they could not control, or just seen it’s wrath – then you will relate to this book. If you’re lucky enough to have not experienced any of that, read this anyway because there are so many lessons to be learned, while at the same time, being an addictive page-turner.

Hunt is not this enormous author that everyone on earth knows of, but considering I read about a book a day, let me say this. This woman is a force to be reckoned with in the literary world whose writing is intelligent, honest, and real. This is my second time reading one of her novels and both times I have been left in awe of the outstanding writing, the characters, and the overall themes. There aren’t enough words to describe how much I recommend this one. Yes, there are sad parts and tense moments, but I assure you it will leave you with a smile and there will be at least some small something to which you can relate.

5.0 out of 5 stars -Favorite new author!

Book: Whiskey & Wine

I'm totally in love with this book. I loved the characters, the plot, the songs, the writing...all of it! To be a debut novel of a new author it is definitely memorable! I couldn't put this down.

Ellie and Dean were one of those couple that at first seemed like opposites attracted because their reputations were so different but once you really got to know them outside of their reputations you saw that they were actually perfect for each other. Both had come from difficult home lives, both had a undeniable passion and talent for music and both were more than a little scared to fall in love. However, Dean was a little braver for diving in first. I rooted for them even before I figured out who Dean really was under all bad boy reputation.

The ending was perfection! H. Dillon Smith just became one of my favorite new authors and I'll definitely be watching for her new books from now on!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars-It felt like I was reading a great episode of Nashville!

Book: Whiskey & Wine

When you grow up in the south it is pretty much guaranteed that you are going grow up with pick-up trucks, country music and country boys. It was pretty much what my life revolved around from the time I was 14 or 15 until I got married. And he still rides me around in his truck while I am blaring country music. So, when I got a copy of Whiskey and Wine and read the synopsis, it intrigued me.

Ellie Ray Vaughn is a strong lead character that is stubborn as can be. She knows what she wants out of life, or at least she thinks that she does. Music calls to her and is in her blood but her mothers obsession with it and the horrible childhood she experienced make her skittish to actually chase her dream. Ellie also has issues with an abusive ex boyfriend that is adding to her stress, But after an impromptu gig one night the addiction to music and writing is reignited.

Now Dean Thomas is just downright swoon worthy. Yeah, at first you want to smack him for being a manwhore but we all know he acts that way because he is scared and because the right girl hasn't knocked him on his butt yet. I love Dean's backstory and all the things you find out about his past. I especially love how much he loves his mama. Plus, he play guitar, sings and ha blue eyes!

I throughly enjoyed this book from page one. The build between the characters and the emotional connection that I had with them was perfect. Some of the plot was a little predictable, but I loved it nonetheless. It felt like I was reading a great episode of Nashville. I can't wait to read more from this debut author!

5.0 out of 5 stars-Fantastic debut romance!

Book: Whiskey & Wine

“Whiskey and Wine,” is H. Dillon Smith’s debut novel and it is a fantastic romance. Ellie hasn’t had the best upbringing dealing with an alcoholic musician mother that gave her away, as well as, recently breaking up with an abusive boyfriend. She was raised by her aunt and uncle but always felt like a guest in their room rather than family. Getting ready to start college, Ellie and her best friend Annie are out at a bar when Ellie’s cousin Chandler begs her to fill in for their singer. Luckily Ellie agrees and she meets the guitarist Dean Thomas.

Dean also has a dark past after the death of his real father, his mother marrying a controlling and abusive Marine, and then with his mother’s death. While she was dying, she would talk to Dean about him meeting the girl he will fall in love with. She described a girl who has also had a troubling past, expresses herself with words and music, and is stubborn. Dean’s track record with girls has been one night flings so far, and he has a reputation as a player. But as soon as Dean meets Ellie, and especially after hearing her sing, he knows he has met the girl for him.

Ellie tries to push Dean away or at least remain just friends but things become challenging once she realizes he is rooming with her cousin right down the hall. Moreover, they have classes together, hang out with the same crowd, and he always seeks out her input on his songwriting. Ellie’s abusive ex-boyfriend is back in the picture also, calling and texting her to the point she thinks she may need another restraining order. Dean is persistent but not pushy, and eventually, Ellie can’t ignore their feelings for one another.

Why is “Whiskey and Wine” a different and unique romance? To being with, Ellie and Dean are amazing characters that are relatable and draw the reader in. They’re a mix of talent and fear, hope and painful memories. This isn’t an easy, storybook romance where everything just happily falls into place. Both of these complex main characters are battling demons from their pasts, as well as some demons in the present. Their talent and love for music help bring them closer, but her fear of his previous reputation also holds her back. There are a lot of sweet, romantic moments between these two, not just physically, but in-depth conversations and really getting to know one another. Smith developed a fantastic storyline and provided enough subplots for depth, but this novel doesn’t overwhelm you with too many details from too many characters. The only exception, without giving spoilers, is a scene in the hospital where there is a sort of revelation about Ellie’s past and family. I was confused as hell for a few minutes and had to go back a few pages to re-read, but I eventually got it:)

I loved this story and certainly loved the characters. This is a book you will read in one sitting because you can’t tear yourself away. H. Dillon Smith has written an amazing debut novel and I can’t wait to read more from her in the future!
